final reflection on the module
My major in undergraduate study is Educational Technology in Beijing Normal University. Compared with previous study, a global view of analyzing ITE is the most inspiring part in learning this module.Comparison between different countries enable me to gain a deeper understanding of the ITE system and the importance of background on influencing ITE master plans. Another I used to think policies were useless and boring, but I changed my mind gradually when learning deeply.
From the global scope, we analyzed the relationship between leadership, management and ICT. By modifying our mind map, we gained a depth-understanding of the 3 key items and made our understanding visible.
This is my first year coming into Hong Kong. It’s really lucky for me to be in the Group 5. At first, I was really nervous to communicate in English. My group mates are really nice and slow down their speaking so I could understand them. I still remember how nervous I was the first time to present the 2nd group Mind Map. My teammates trusted me and encouraged me to do the presentation without much pressure. Surprisingly, after that I no longer feel stressful to present.
I found it really helpful to learn this course with part-time students who are almost teachers. Discussing with them both in classes and on the class forum help understand the local culture in schools and know what the reality is beyond the perfect theories. The difficulties teachers met when implementing ICT explains why there is a need for leadership to change. For example, As Viven said it’s difficult for teachers to facilitate students’ 21 century skills using ICT when principles don’t allow students using iPadS or mobile phones during classes or even bring to schools. Teachers need support from their leaders and the leadership should be distributed to multi-level to nurture innovation.
Organisational learning is important. Learning is especially vital for teachers. Most teachers are good at traditional pedagogy. Teachers as the key species who need to develop new knowledge and skills to integrate ICT into classes. My parents are both teachers in secondary school. My fathered received a ICT training for about 2 weeks last month. He was a mathematics teacher, and was disappointed that they learned how to make a movie and radio which is not so helpful in mathematics discipline. Some times the ICT plan may be not so perfect, and the leaders needs feedback from the teachers to change the plan and make it more practical. So the interaction between leaders and other stuffs should be mutual instead of top-down.
Leadership no longer only belongs to official designated leaders anymore in my mind. It can be assigned multilevel and both official and non-offical. Management has responsibility to manage routine for organisational learning and give access to mutual interaction. ICT is not super-hero to the success of innovation. It is the leverage to support innovative changes and educators can't expect to buy infrastructures and services to do all the things. Leadership have to share vision, create share culture and empower the teachers, more importantly, let the teachers have leadership themselves.
Overall, the module offer me a global perspective of ICT in education. With the new vision, I believe I will benefit from it in the future work in the ITE industry.
